Atucha 1 operating licence renewed
Argentina's nuclear regulator has extended the operating licence of the Atucha 1 nuclear power reactor. The licence extension allows the 44-year-old 362 MWe (gross) pressurised heavy water reactor - the first nuclear power plant in Latin America - to operate until 2024.

Russia to assist Argentina in uranium mining
Russia and Argentina have signed a memorandum of understanding on uranium exploration and mining in the South American country. Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom is also proposing to supply Argentina with a nuclear power plant.

Argentina and China sign contract for two reactors
China is to supply Argentina with two nuclear power reactors - one a Candu pressurised heavy water reactor, the other a Hualong One pressurised water reactor. The contract was among 19 agreements signed yesterday in Beijing during a meeting of Chinese president Xi Jinping and Argentinean president Mauricio Macri.

SNC-Lavalin wins Atucha contract
SNC-Lavalin has been awarded a pre-project contract from Argentina's Nucleoeléctrica Argentina SA for the Candu nuclear new build project at the Atucha site in the district of Zàrate. The Canadian engineering group said yesterday that, "if this project materialises, it would be the first Candu new build since Cernavoda Unit 2 came on line in 2007".

Energoatom expands cooperation with CNNP, NASA and IDOM Nuclear Services
Ukrainian nuclear power plant operator Energoatom has agreed to enhance its cooperation with Chinese, Argentinian and Spanish companies - respectively, China National Nuclear Power, Nucleoeléctrica Argentina SA and IDOM Nuclear Services.

Contract for prototype CAREM balance of plant
Argentina's National Atomic Energy Commission has awarded a contract to a joint venture between Tecna and Siemens to supply the balance of plant for the prototype CAREM-25, a domestically-designed and developed small integral reactor.

New steam generators delivered to Embalse ahead of overhaul
The second pair of replacement steam generators has been delivered to the Embalse nuclear power plant in Argentina. The components will be replaced as part of a project to extend the operating period of the Candu pressurized heavy-water reactor by up to 30 years.

China and Argentina reaffirm reactor agreement
China and Argentina have signed a memorandum of understanding reaffirming their plans to construct two new nuclear power reactors in the Latin American country with financing from Chinese banks. Construction of Argentina's fourth reactor is to start early next year.

Brazil to export enriched uranium
Industrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB) is to export its first enriched uranium under a contract signed with Argentine state company Combustibles Nuclear Argentinos SA (Conuar). The agreement will see the export of four tonnes of uranium dioxide powder for use in the first fuel load for the Carem modular reactor.

Atucha 2 receives full operating licence
Argentina's nuclear regulator has issued a licence to Nucleoeléctrica Argentina SA for the commercial operation of the second unit of the Atucha nuclear power plant. The 745 MWe pressurized heavy water reactor has been operating on a conditional licence.
