Measures outlined by the South African president in his State of the Nation Address include market reforms and the appointment a Minister of Electricity to assume full responsibility for overseeing all aspects of the electricity crisis response. The government has declared a national state of disaster to respond to the ongoing crisis.

The Nuclear Policy Council - headed by President Emmanuel Macron - met on 3 February to "take stock of the entire French nuclear dossier, both in the short and long-term". The council has called for a new skills development programme, as well as studies into how radioactive waste will be managed, in order for a nuclear new-build programme to be launched.

A proposal to amend Sweden's legislation on nuclear power has been presented by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari. The proposed changes would remove the current law limiting the number of reactors in operation to ten, as well as allowing reactors to be built on new plant sites, rather than just existing sites.

The German federal cabinet has approved an executive decision by Chancellor Olaf Scholz to allow the country's three remaining nuclear power plants to continue operating beyond the end of this year. It approved a draft amendment to the Atomic Energy Act which enables the Emsland, Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim 2 plants to operate until 15 April 2023 at the latest.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has taken the decision to allow all three of Germany's remaining operating nuclear power plants to continue generating electricity until 15 April next year. His decision follows disagreement among the governing coalition parties over the continued operation of the plants.

Sweden's incoming centre-right coalition government has adopted a positive stance towards nuclear energy, calling for state-owned energy company Vattenfall to investigate the possible restart of Ringhals units 1 and 2, as well as to prepare for the construction of new reactors.

The UK's Prime Minister Liz Truss and France's President Emmanuel Macron have both expressed their support for the construction of the Sizewell C nuclear power plant in Suffolk, England, saying they "expect the relevant bodies to finalise arrangements in the coming month".

The US House of Representatives has voted to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, which now heads to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. The passing of the wide-ranging bill, which includes support for existing and new nuclear, was welcomed by the nuclear industry.

South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Doosan Enerbility and nuclear energy equipment and materials manufacturers with the aim of revitalising the country's nuclear industry.

The state-controlled nuclear giant EDF has launched a legal claim against the French government for more than EUR8.0 billion (USD8.2 billion) in lost earnings resulting from the order to sell more nuclear electricity at below market-level prices this year.
