The final canister containing used fuel has been removed from the storage pool of the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in New Jersey, USA, and placed in an on-site dry storage facility. Holtec International said the plant's defuelling - completed in just 32 months following the plant's permanent shutdown - has set a new world record.

EDF subsidiary Cyclife Sweden AB has signed a long-term contract with German nuclear operator PreussenElektra for the transport and processing of 16 steam generators. These large metal components will be transported from the Unterweser, Grafenrheinfeld, Grohnde and Brokdorf nuclear power plants in Germany to Cyclife's industrial site in Nyköping, Sweden, for processing.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power has applied to the Nuclear Safety & Security Commission for approval to dismantle unit 1 of the Kori nuclear power plant near Busan. The unit was permanently shut down in June 2017, becoming the first South Korean reactor to enter decommissioning.

The Chapelcross Site’s storage facility has taken its first active waste package - a Ductile Cast Iron Container with waste from the site’s former cooling pond, Magnox Limited announced today.

EnergySolutions has announced it is to acquire the Kewaunee nuclear power plant from current owner Dominion Energy, and will complete the decommissioning of the single-unit plant, which shut down in 2013.
 

Unit 1 of the Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania is empty of all fuel, following the transportation on 11 May of the final container with damaged used nuclear fuel to a temporary storage facility.

Japan's nuclear regulator today approved Tokyo Electric Power Company's decommissioning plan for the four reactors at its Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant, close to the damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant.

A joint agreement has been reached between the State of New York, Entergy, Holtec and other stakeholders to provide for the transfer of the Indian Point nuclear power plant to Holtec for decommissioning and site remediation. It also resolves pending litigation concerning the post-shutdown transfer of plant licences when the final unit at the site shuts down later this month.

The Japanese government today announced its formal decision that the treated water stored at the Fukushima Daiichi site will be discharged into the sea. Tokyo Electric Power Company is expected to start discharging the mildly-radioactive water in 2023 in line with international standards and regulations.

Production at the Cominak uranium mine at Akouta in Niger came to an end yesterday after over 40 years of operations during which it produced more than 75,000 tU. The mine has now entered the remediation phase, which will also include action to address the impact of the mine's closure on its employees and on local communities. Cominak's board of directors announced in October 2019 that the mine would close this month due to depletion of its resources.

Southern California Edison has released a three-part strategic plan for the relocation of used nuclear fuel from the shut-down San Onofre plant. The company has also launched a stakeholder coalition with two local counties to advocate for and encourage federal government action to deal with used fuel currently stored at San Onofre and other US nuclear sites.
