Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has been contracted by China Techenergy Company to supply an Industrial Anti-seismic Protection System for units 7 and 8 of the Tianwan nuclear power plant in Jiangsu province. Earlier this year, CTEC - a subsidiary of China General Nuclear - awarded the South Korean company a contract for the IAPS systems for units 3 and 4 at the Xudabao plant in Liaoning province.

Samsung C&T Corporation has committed to making an equity investment in NuScale to support deployment of its small modular reactor and is developing a business collaboration agreement with NuScale's engineering, construction and procurement partner Fluor Corporation. The announcement comes days after Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction increased its investment to support deployment of NuScale's SMR.

South Korea's Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has agreed to make an additional USD60 million investment in NuScale Power to continue to support deployment of its small modular reactor. Including the latest investment, DHIC and its financial investors have invested more than USD100 million in NuScale. DHIC and NuScale have also agreed to expand cooperation to the field of hydrogen production and desalination using SMRs.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power has today begun loading fuel assemblies into the core of unit 1 at its Shin Hanul nuclear power plant, days after being granted an operating licence for the reactor. The unit - the first of two APR-1400 reactors at the site - is scheduled to enter commercial operation in March 2022 following tests at various power levels to ensure that all systems operate safely as designed.

South Korea's nuclear safety regulator has given its conditional approval for the start-up of unit 1 at Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's Shin Hanul nuclear power plant. The Nuclear Safety and Security Committee has called for additional safety measures at the unit - the first of two APR-1400 reactors at the site.

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries have announced plans to work together on the development of a molten salt reactor for marine propulsion and floating nuclear power plants. Samsung Heavy Industries is also carrying out R&D into using ammonia and hydrogen to power ships in efforts to find alternative, low-emission propulsion options.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power has applied to the Nuclear Safety & Security Commission for approval to dismantle unit 1 of the Kori nuclear power plant near Busan. The unit was permanently shut down in June 2017, becoming the first South Korean reactor to enter decommissioning.

Barakah unit 1 entered commercial operation today, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation has announced. The unit, which is operated by Nawah Energy Company, has been the single largest electricity generator in the UAE since reaching 100% power in early December. ENEC said the 1400-megawatt unit, which is in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, is now providing "constant, reliable and sustainable electricity around the clock". As a result, ENEC says it is "now leading the largest decarbonisation effort of any industry in the UAE to date". 

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on research & development and technology exchange related to the operation of Korean-designed APR1400 reactors. South Korea's first APR1400 unit entered commercial operation in December 2015, while four such reactors are due to start up in the UAE by 2023.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has been awarded its first contract for nuclear power instrumentation and controls in the Chinese nuclear market. The South Korean company signed a contract with China Techenergy Company on 29 March to supply an Industrial Anti-seismic Protection System for units 3 and 4 of the planned Xudapu nuclear power plant in China's Liaoning province.

Petrojet - an Egyptian petroleum sector company - is boosting cooperation with South Korean companies including Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Kepco E&C, Hyundai E&C and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction to participate in Egypt's first nuclear power plant project. The El Dabaa plant is to be built by Russia's JSC Atomstroyexport as the general contractor for the project. Petrojet Chairman Waleed Lotfy signed a teaming agreement with representatives of the South Korean companies, who visited Petrojet's headquarters in Cairo on 16 March.

South Korea's Kepco Engineering & Construction Company and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on the development of floating nuclear power plants.
