Studsvik-Westinghouse decommissioning team
A 'full range' of decommissioning services are to be offered by a Studsvik and Westinghouse consortium known as NDCon that will initially focus on Germany and Sweden.
The companies issued a joint announcement of their decision to team up yesterday. It noted Westinghouse's longstanding expertise in the technology and decommissioning of nuclear reactors of many kinds, as well as Studsvik's offerings in waste treatment, engineering and services and operating efficiency.
"By establishing this cooperation," said head of Studsvik Anders Jackson, "we complement Studsvik's areas of competence with all of the services that are necessary to offer turnkey contracts in connection with the decommissioning of nuclear power plants." The NDCon name will be used when pitching for and engaging in cooperative work.
The companies noted that Europe's reactor fleet includes a number of units approaching 50 years of age. "Additionally, political decisions have shortened the expected operation of nuclear power plants in Germany. For these reasons, a significant number of nuclear power plants across Europe will need to be decommissioned and dismantled in the next 15 to 20 years."
