Name for third UK builder
The consortium of power firms planning to build 3.6 GWe of new nuclear capacity near Sellafield has picked the name NuGeneration and joined the UK trade body.
GdF Suez, Iberdrola and Scottish & Southern jointly own an option for a 190-hectare site alongside Sellafield in West Cumbria. Although they have not picked a reactor design yet, the trio intend to build some 3.6 GWe of nuclear generating capacity with the first part coming online around 2023.
NuGeneration will be the entity to carry this out, owned 37.5% each by Gdf Suez and Iberdrola while Scottish & Southern owns 25%.
Senior management for NuGen will include Olivier Carret, formerly of GdF Suez, as chief operating officer. Chief nuclear director will be Alfio Vidal, formerly of Iberdrola, and who has previously been plant manager of the Cofrentes nuclear power plant in Spain.
The name NuGeneration was announced today as the company joined the UK Nuclear Industry Association (NiA) as its 250th member. The NiA said it represents the "53,000 British nuclear workers" from its membership and it "campaigns for the UK's low-carbon future."
The trade body's chief executive, Keith Parker, said, "They join us at a crucial stage in the development of a low-carbon future for Britain where renewables, clean coal, and particularly safe and secure new nuclear power will have a hugely important part to play."
NuGen is one of three firms working towards new nuclear power plants in the UK. First to build should be EdF, which plans two reactors each at Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C. Horizon Nuclear Power is a joint venture of EOn and RWE and is looking at the Wylfa and Oldbury sites.
