Images show tsunami impact
The most dramatic pictures yet of the tsunami inundation at Fukushima Daiichi have been released today by Tokyo Electric Power Company.
The photographs shot by a power plant worker show the moments in which the first tsunami waves breached sea defences at Fukushima Daiichi about one hour after the magnitude 9.0 earthquake on 11 March. Later waves completely overwhelmed the power plant's sea front, carrying debris including cars into the site. The scale of power plant facilities visible in the images puts in context the sheer depth of inundation that the Daiichi plant suffered, reaching at least five metres across the main part of the site - enough to leave a large vehicle hooked to the sides of a damaged building far above the ground.
