Swedish nuclear utility OKG reported that a contract worker conducting maintenance work in the turbine hall at unit 3 of the Oskarshamn nuclear power plant has died following a workplace accident.
The accident occurred just before 5 am on 15 March while the man, who was working for a sub-contractor, was working in the unit's turbine hall. The 61-year-old man was hit in the chest by a jack that had broken loose, according to a report by The Local.
An ambulance was called to the site and the unconscious man was taken to a nearby hospital. However, he was later declared dead as a result of his injuries.
The police have launched an investigation into the man's death. A report has been submitted by OKG to the Swedish Work Environment Authority.
Oskarshamn 3 was not in operation at the time of the accident. The unit had been taken offline on 1 March for its annual maintenance check. All maintenance work at the unit was immediately suspended.
"We are deeply saddened over what happened," said Lars Thuringia, CEO of OKG.
