The customised analogue system was developed under a contract awarded in 2017 to Framatome in collaboration with global security and aerospace company Lockheed Martin’s Energy business line. It boasts triple modular redundancy and allows plant operators to control and manage reactor operations to ensure efficient and reliable power generation, Framatome said.

Frédéric Lelièvre, Framatome senior executive vice president for Sales, Regional Platforms and the Instrumentation and Control Business Unit, described I&C systems as "technological bricks" that can be adapted to meet customer needs to ensure "ever safer" plant operation. "We embrace the positive potential of collaboration in projects where conditions are favourable, and the ESFAS for Calvert Cliffs is a perfect example of that," he said.

Calvert Cliffs unit 2 is one of two pressurised water reactors at the plant in Maryland. The ESFAS installation and testing was completed a scheduled refuelling outage earlier this year.
