The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has approved the operation of units 5 and 6 of the Bruce B nuclear power plant beyond the 210,000 equivalent full power hours threshold. Bruce B is located in the Municipality of Kincardine, on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, in Ontario.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has approved the operation of units 5 and 6 of the Bruce B nuclear power plant beyond the 210,000 equivalent full power hours (EFPH) threshold. Bruce B is located in the Municipality of Kincardine, on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, in Ontario.

The approval authorizes Bruce Power to operate the units, on a temporary basis, up to a maximum of 245,000 EFPH. The matter will be further considered as part of the relicensing hearings of the Bruce nuclear power plant planned for January and April 2015. The CNSC said it is satisfied that two units can be operated safely beyond 210,000 EFPH until that time.

During a hearing held on 10 August, the CNSC considered submissions from Bruce Power and CNSC staff. The Record of Proceedings, including Reasons for Decision, is available on the CNSC website.

The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect the health, safety and security of Canadians and the environment; to implement Canada's international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.

The power reactor operating licences for the Bruce nuclear power plants A and B are valid until 31 May, 2015.
