The Moycock Casting Facility in North Carolina will employ 20 people to manufacture the components using raw materials supplied by a local concrete manufacturer. The modules are then transported to customers.
The horizontal storage modules are one of the four primary components making up the NUHOMS dry storage system, used for the long-term above-ground storage of used nuclear fuel. Fuel is transferred from at-reactor used fuel pools into shielded storage canisters which are housed in the concrete modules.
Areva TN senior vice president Greg Vesey said that the new facility, coupled with the company's stainless steel canister fabrication facility in Kernersville, North Carolina, would streamline its manufacturing process and strengthening its vertical supply chain. "These modern facilities enable us to provide superior quality and schedule certainty to our customers with a clear focus on operational excellence," he said.
NUHOMS horizontal storage modules are currently in use at more than 30 nuclear facilities across the USA, the company said.
