A small modular reactor project development company - the first in Scandinavia - has been launched in Sweden. Kärnfull Next - a fully-owned subsidiary of Kärnfull Future AB - will collaborate with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy on the deployment of the BWRX-300 in Sweden.

Fennovoima says that the "Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the counter measures by EU and western countries as a consequence" pose a "major risk" to the future of the nuclear power plant project.

The Swedish Energy Agency has awarded Swedish Modular Reactors AB - a joint venture between Uniper Sweden and LeadCold - funding of just over SEK99 million (USD10.6 million) in support of the construction of a demonstration LeadCold SEALER lead-cooled small modular reactor at the Oskarshamn plant site.

Construction of the final repository for used nuclear fuel in Forsmark and the associated fuel encapsulation plant in Oskarshamn can proceed, Sweden's Minister of Climate and Environment Annika Strandhäll has announced.

Swedish power company OKG AB has signed its first contract to supply hydrogen produced at its Oskarshamn nuclear power plant. According to the agreement with Linde Gas AB, the first delivery of hydrogen produced with fossil-free nuclear power will be completed early this year.

The Swedish government has stated that it intends to announce a decision on the expansion of the existing SFR repository for low and intermediate-level waste at Forsmark on 22 December. In a press conference today, Minister of Climate and Environment Annika Strandhäll said a decision on the application for a final repository for used nuclear fuel also at Forsmark will be announced on 27 January.

A pilot study by Sweden's Studsvik AB shows that all of Norway's metallic uranium research reactor fuel could be processed using its oxidation process in less than two years. Several studies have already recommended chemical treatment of the fuel before it is disposed of in an underground repository.

The consortium of Nukem Technologies and Uniper Anlagenservice has completed cutting up the pressure vessel of the Barsebäck 1 reactor in Sweden. The applied two-stage thermal cutting technique would be refined and used on Barsebäck 2 as well as Oskarshamn 1 and 2.

An International Atomic Energy Agency team of experts has completed a follow-up Safety Aspects of Long-Term Operation mission to units 1 and 2 of the Forsmark nuclear power plant in Sweden. The team reviewed the plant's response to recommendations and suggestions made during an initial IAEA Pre-SALTO mission in 2019.

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has said the studies included in the consultation on Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB's application to build a final repository for used nuclear fuel at Forsmark present no reasons for it to change its previous assessments of the project. The regulator was responding to the government's referral regarding the application.

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has published a report on ways to inform future generations where radioactive waste has been disposed of and how it should be handled. The report was commissioned by the government to examine different methods for how information and knowledge about the final repository for used nuclear fuel can be secured over a long period of time.

The Swedish government's decision to approve an expansion of the existing Clab interim repository for used fuel while continuing to consider the application for a final repository has "created uncertainties in the legal procedure for obtaining final decisions on the storage of nuclear fuel," Vattenfall has said. The utility warned the decision has made it more likely that units 2 and 3 of its Forsmark nuclear power plant may have to shut down in 2024 and 2025.
