Fennovoima has withdrawn its construction licence application for the planned Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant project at Pyhäjoki in northern Finland. The move follows the company's termination of the plant's engineering, procurement and construction contract with Russia's RAOS Project earlier this month.

Finland's Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority has started reviewing Posiva Oy's operating licence application for the world's first used fuel disposal facility after concluding the company has provided sufficient material.

Rosatom’s unit in Finland says it has "no other choice but to defend ourselves and demand compensation" for the "unlawful termination" of the Hanhikivi I project, adding that it is ready to discuss "possible options for the project to recommence when conditions permit".

The start of regular electricity production at Olkiluoto 3 in Finland has been postponed by two months due to necessary inspections and repairs to the cooling system of the unit's generator, operator Teollisuuden Voima Oyj announced. Regular electricity production at the EPR unit had previously been expected to begin at the end of July.

Poland sees the involvement of its industry in the Finnish nuclear sector as a springboard for its own new-build aspirations, an international business forum in Warsaw has heard. The Polish-Finnish Nuclear Industry Forum saw companies from both countries discuss cooperation.

CORRECTED The city of Vantaa has said its municipal energy company must withdraw from the project to build the Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant in Finland, saying the situation in Ukraine makes it unlikely a licence would be granted.

Finnish utility Fortum Power and Heat Oy has submitted an application to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment to operate both units 1 and 2 of its Loviisa nuclear power plant until the end of 2050. The current operating licences expire at the end of 2027 and 2030, respectively.

Unit 3 of Finland's Olkiluoto nuclear power plant was connected to the national grid on 12 March and has started supplying electricity, operator Teollisuuden Voima Oyj announced. The 1600 MWe EPR is scheduled to enter regular electricity production in July.

Commissioning tests are progressing well at Olkiluoto 3, with grid connection now expected to take place on 15 March, Teollisuuden Voima Oyj has said.

Finnish utility Fortum announced it will apply to renew the operating licences for both units 1 and 2 of the Loviisa nuclear power plant until the end of 2050.

The Finnish government and nuclear regulator have published a comprehensive plan and an environmental impact assessment for the management of all the used fuel and radioactive waste generated in the country.
