International Atomic Energy Agency experts at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant have carried out further inspections "so far without observing any heavy military equipment, explosives or mines" but are still awaiting access to the rooftops of the reactor buildings.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is urging investigation of whether an external boiler can be installed to generate the steam required so all six Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant units can be placed in cold shutdown. 

A Westinghouse-led consortium has been selected by the European Union to develop and deliver a "fully European" nuclear fuel supply for Russian-designed VVER pressurised water reactors.

The energy ministers of Ukraine and Bulgaria have signed a memorandum of understanding to "deepen cooperation" in the energy sector, including "participation in joint projects and initiatives involving joint activities in the field of nuclear energy".

Westinghouse has signed a contract with Ukraine's Energoatom to design, manufacture and deliver long-term containment cooling systems as part of the modernisation of units 1 and 2 of the Rivne nuclear power plant. Meanwhile, Westinghouse is working with 11 European partners to create security of supply of fuel for VVER reactors operating in the EU and Ukraine.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi is travelling to Ukraine to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky and says he also aims to assess the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant following last week's damage to the Nova Kakhovka dam.

It comes as the IAEA and nuclear experts in Ukraine and in Russia say there is no short-term risk to its safety and security as a result of the damaged Nova Kakhovka dam.

The International Atomic Energy Agency says the impact of the damage to the dam on cooling water supplies to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is being monitored but alternative sources of water on-site should provide sufficient water for cooling "for some months" and means "our current assessment is that there is no immediate risk to the safety of the plant".

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has said he hopes to "reinforce" the agency's team of experts at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to reflect its expanded role, which includes monitoring compliance with the five safety and security principles outlined at the United Nations last week.
