Swedish power company OKG AB has signed its first contract to supply hydrogen produced at its Oskarshamn nuclear power plant. According to the agreement with Linde Gas AB, the first delivery of hydrogen produced with fossil-free nuclear power will be completed early this year.

The Swedish government has stated that it intends to announce a decision on the expansion of the existing SFR repository for low and intermediate-level waste at Forsmark on 22 December. In a press conference today, Minister of Climate and Environment Annika Strandhäll said a decision on the application for a final repository for used nuclear fuel also at Forsmark will be announced on 27 January.

A pilot study by Sweden's Studsvik AB shows that all of Norway's metallic uranium research reactor fuel could be processed using its oxidation process in less than two years. Several studies have already recommended chemical treatment of the fuel before it is disposed of in an underground repository.

The consortium of Nukem Technologies and Uniper Anlagenservice has completed cutting up the pressure vessel of the Barsebäck 1 reactor in Sweden. The applied two-stage thermal cutting technique would be refined and used on Barsebäck 2 as well as Oskarshamn 1 and 2.

An International Atomic Energy Agency team of experts has completed a follow-up Safety Aspects of Long-Term Operation mission to units 1 and 2 of the Forsmark nuclear power plant in Sweden. The team reviewed the plant's response to recommendations and suggestions made during an initial IAEA Pre-SALTO mission in 2019.

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has said the studies included in the consultation on Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB's application to build a final repository for used nuclear fuel at Forsmark present no reasons for it to change its previous assessments of the project. The regulator was responding to the government's referral regarding the application.

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has published a report on ways to inform future generations where radioactive waste has been disposed of and how it should be handled. The report was commissioned by the government to examine different methods for how information and knowledge about the final repository for used nuclear fuel can be secured over a long period of time.

The Swedish government's decision to approve an expansion of the existing Clab interim repository for used fuel while continuing to consider the application for a final repository has "created uncertainties in the legal procedure for obtaining final decisions on the storage of nuclear fuel," Vattenfall has said. The utility warned the decision has made it more likely that units 2 and 3 of its Forsmark nuclear power plant may have to shut down in 2024 and 2025.

A government decision on Sweden's final waste repository will be delayed by the launch of a public consultation on whether the application for the repository should be considered separately from that for an expansion of the existing Clab interim repository used fuel, Finnish nuclear operator Fortum has said. A government decision, it warned, is needed before the end of this month in order to avoid future disruptions to electricity supply due to a lack of interim used fuel storage capacity.

Core components of Sweden's Ringhals units 1 and 2 will be cut up and disposed of by Westinghouse, starting as early as April 2023, plant owner Vattenfall has announced. A contract announced today covers the reactor pressure vessels, internals and fuel racks. The companies described the deal as "extending their long-standing nuclear energy partnership into decommissioning activities."

Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (SKB) has urged the Swedish government to make a decision on its application for a used fuel encapsulation plant and final repository in combination with that for an expansion of its existing repository for low and intermediate-level waste. On 20 June, the government asked the radioactive waste management company how it intends to separate the application for the final repository.
