India's Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, currently under construction at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu, is currently targeted for completion in October 2022, Minister of State Jitendra Singh has told the Lok Sabha. Singh also said Kudankulam units 3 and 4 are expected to be completed in 2023.

The Volgodonsk branch of AEM Technologies has started assembling the upper part of the reactor pressure vessel for unit 5 of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant under construction in India. Two Russian-designed AES-92 VVER-1000 pressurised water reactors are being built as the third phase of the plant in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

Construction of unit 5 of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant has formally begun with the pouring of first concrete for the foundation plate of the reactor building at the site in Tamil Nadu, India. It was launched today by Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas, chairman of India's Atomic Energy Commission and secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy, in the presence of Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachov and Satish Kumar Sharma, managing director of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd, in a ceremony that had to be held via videoconference owing to COVID-19 restrictions.

French company EDF has submitted to Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd its binding techno-commercial offer to build six EPRs at Jaitapur in Maharashtra. The offer is the culmination of work that began with the 2018 signature of an agreement between the two companies and paves the way for discussions towards a binding framework agreement.

The Indian government and the International Energy Agency today signed a Framework for Strategic Partnership to deepen their collaboration across a wide range of critical topics including energy security and clean energy transitions. The partnership has been described as a stepping stone towards India becoming a full member of the agency.

Unit 3 of the Kakrapar nuclear power plant in India's Gujarat state has been connected to the electricity grid. The reactor - the country's first indigenously-designed 700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactor - achieved criticality in July last year.

Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited and TVEL, the nuclear fuel manufacturer subsidiary of Russia's Rosatom, have signed a supplementary agreement to the fuel supply contract for the VVER-1000 reactors in operation at Kudankulam. The agreement includes the introduction of TVS-2M nuclear fuel and an extension of the fuel cycle from 12 to 18 months.

India's Atomic Energy Regulatory Board has given its consent for the pouring of first concrete for the first two 700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactors to be built at Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojna in the Fatehabad district of Haryana. The indigenously designed units are to be built by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd.

India and the USA have extended their Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation on the Global Centre for Nuclear Energy Partnership by 10 years. The centre - officially opened in 2017 - supports international cooperation in nuclear energy applications.
