Rosatom and its subsidiaries have this week signed a number of agreements with countries planning to introduce nuclear power to their energy mix, including Azerbaijan, Congo, Cuba, Ethiopia, Serbia and Uzbekistan. The documents were signed during the XI International Forum Atomexpo 2019.

Main construction work for the second unit at Kursk II in Russia has begun two weeks ahead of schedule. The site in Western Russia is the first to use the VVER-TOI (typical optimised, with enhanced information) reactor design.

Unit 2 of the Novovoronezh II nuclear power plant in southwest Russia started the process of physical launch yesterday after having received regulatory approval to do so, Rosenergoatom, the operator subsidiary of state nuclear corporation Rosatom, has announced.

Unit 1 of the Leningrad Phase II nuclear power plant in northwest Russia has produced 5.7 terawatt hours of electricity since it was connected to the grid on 9 March 2018, state nuclear corporation Rosatom said yesterday. A full-scale simulator at unit 4 of the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant - the BN-800 fast neutron reactor in Russia - has passed acceptance tests, state nuclear corporation Rosatom has announced. The BN-800 fast neutron reactor started operating at 100% power for the first time in August 2016.

Rosatom has announced completion of life-extending  modernisation work at unit 3 of the Smolensk nuclear power plant, the last of three RBMK-1000 reactors at the site in western Russia. The other two units are already set for an extended period of operation of 15 years.

Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom has announced completion of the basemat for the nuclear island buildings of unit 1 of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey. Meanwhile the European Parliament has voted to suspend EU accession negotiations with Turkey and has reportedly called for cancellation of the Akkuyu project.

The general contract has been signed for the construction of two further Russian-supplied reactors at the Tianwan nuclear power plant in China's Jiangsu province. In addition, a technical design contract was signed for a second pair of reactors at the Xudabao site in Liaoning province.
