National Grid, which owns and operates the electricity transmission network in England and Wales, has forecast that, in 2019, more of Britain's power will be generated from zero-carbon sources than from fossil fuels for the first time since the Industrial Revolution.

New nuclear plants are well-placed to form a major part of an affordable low-carbon transition in the UK, the Energy Technologies Institute says in a report it published today. It is the latest from the ETI's Nuclear Cost Drivers project, which it launched in October 2017.

Engineers at Lancaster University are developing computer systems for robots handling hazardous nuclear waste. The software will make the robots semi-autonomous - simplifying human control, which has to be done remotely due to the highly radioactive environments in which the robots operate.

Uranium enrichment company Urenco has today held a ceremony to mark the official opening of its Tails Management Facility at Capenhurst in the UK. The TMF will treat depleted uranium tails, a by-product of the enrichment process, by converting them from uranium hexafluoride into more chemically stable uranium oxide.
