Canada's Nuclear Waste Management Organisation is seeking input from the public to help guide and shape its plans for the transportation of used nuclear fuel from reactor sites to a deep geological repository in the 2040s.

The government of Ontario has announced its support for a plan by Ontario Power Generation to extend the operating period of the Pickering nuclear power plant until the end of 2025. The six operating units are currently scheduled for closure by the end of 2024.

US company X-energy has initiated a Vendor Design Review for its Xe-100 small modular reactor design with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Kinetrics will lead X-energy’s Canadian regulatory affairs and licensing efforts.

Alberta is to join three other Canadian provinces to support the development of small modular reactors, its premier Jason Kenney has announced. SMRs could provide energy for on and off-grid communities as well as steam to industry, including Alberta's oil sands, he said.

Cameco and Orano Canada have announced plans to restart operations at the Cigar Lake uranium mine and the McClean Lake mill. Cameco will restart mine operations at the beginning of September, and Orano expects to be processing uranium by the middle of the month.

A newly signed Memorandum of Understanding between Bruce Power, Isogen and BWXT ITG Canada Inc will see them work together to advance the production of medical radioisotopes in Ontario. Bruce has also signed an MoU with McMaster University on the applications and supply of established and emerging medical isotopes.

Canada's Green Ribbon Panel has developed four principles it believes are necessary to change the conversation around climate, energy and the economy. The panel - formed in February by a collection of environmental and economic leaders - will focus on the role nuclear with other technologies that anchor Canada's energy sector can play in fighting climate change and growing the economy at home and abroad.

Darlington unit 1 has set a new Canadian and North American nuclear record with 895 consecutive days of unbroken operation. Ontario Power Generation's Candu reactor has now been online since 26 January 2018 without needing to be taken out of service for maintenance or repair.

Ontario Power Generation has formally withdrawn its site preparation and construction licence application for a deep geologic repository for low and intermediate-level waste at the Bruce nuclear site. It has also terminated the federal environmental assessment process for the repository.

The government of Saskatchewan has announced the establishment of an office to help in the planning and development of small modular reactors (SMR) in the Canadian province. It said the new office will "coordinate nuclear policy and programme work" within the Climate Change and Adaptation Division in the Ministry of Environment.
