Wide public support for keeping German reactors online, say polls
A majority of the German public are in favour of the continued operation of the country's three remaining nuclear power reactors beyond the end of this year, the results of two opinion polls show. There is significant support for keeping the units running for up to another five years and even to construct new reactors in order to secure energy supplies.

ASN extends water-discharge rule changes as heatwave continues

Scholz says keeping reactors online 'can make sense'
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that keeping the country's final three operating nuclear power reactors online beyond their planned shutdown at the end of this year may "make sense" in order to ensure electricity supplies.

Vogtle 3 approved to load fuel
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has authorised Southern Nuclear Operating Company to load nuclear fuel and begin operation at Vogtle Unit 3 in Georgia, marking the transition of the AP1000 unit from construction oversight into the operating reactor oversight process.

Hinkley Point B enters retirement
EDF Energy announced the Hinkley Point B 1 reactor has been permanently shut down bringing an end to electricity generation at the Hinkley Point B plant in Somerset, England, after 46 years of operation. The Hinkley Point B 2 reactor was shut down on 6 July.

France's nuclear safety regulator, the

, has said it considers EDF's strategy to rectify stress corrosion issues at its nuclear power plants as "appropriate" given the knowledge acquired on the phenomenon and the associated safety issues.

Ukraine offers to support EU as continent braces for gas crisis
Nuclear power imported from Ukraine could avoid consumption of 5-6 billion cubic metres of gas in the EU this winter - more than one-tenth of the total reduction that EU countries agreed when an extraordinary session of EU energy ministers on the energy crisis was joined by their Ukrainian counterpart, Herman Halushchenko.

Energy security bolstered by more nuclear generation, better performance: report
Nuclear generation bounced back from the pandemic-related decline seen in 2020, increasing by 100 TWh to reach 2653 TWh in 2021, according to World Nuclear Association's latest performance report which has just been published.

Agreement on operation of Belgian reactors expected by year-end
The Belgian government and Electrabel have signed a non-binding Letter of Intent on continuing negotiations on the feasibility and terms for the operation of Doel 4 and Tihange 3 for a further ten years. The two sides aim to agree a binding legal agreement by the end of December.

Kakrapar 3 to begin commercial operation this year, minister says
Unit 3 of the Kakrapar nuclear power plant in India's Gujarat state is expected to enter commercial operation by December 2022, atomic energy minister Jitendra Singh said in a written reply to a question in the Indian Parliament's lower house, the Lok Sabha. The reactor is the country's first indigenously-designed 700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactor.

Heatwave forces temporary change to water-discharge rules in France

says that "to ensure the security of the electricity network" it will temporarily modify the strict rules regulating the maximum temperature of cooling water released from some nuclear power plants as the country is in the grips of a summer heatwave.
