Work has begun to build the foundations for the Pallas research reactor in Petten, the Netherlands, which will replace the existing High Flux Reactor. However, the Dutch government has yet to make a final decision on constructing the reactor.

In its draft Climate Fund for 2024, the Dutch government has budgeted funds totalling EUR320 million (USD352 million) for the development of nuclear energy. The funds will be used for the preparation of the operational extension of the existing Borssele nuclear power plant, the construction of two new large reactors, the development of small modular reactors and for nuclear skills development in the Netherlands.

Belgian engineering firm Tractebel has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Netherlands' NRG-Pallas to collaborate in providing engineering services for the construction of large nuclear power plants in the Netherlands.

A construction licence has been granted by the Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection for the Pallas research reactor in Petten, the Netherlands. The new reactor will replace the existing High Flux Reactor.

EPZ, operator of the Borssele nuclear power plant in the Netherlands, is committed to ensuring operational safety and reliability of the plant, an International Atomic Energy Agency mission has concluded. The team also encouraged continued improvements, including with its radiation protection programme.

Thorizon of the Netherlands has raised EUR12.5 million (USD12.4 million) for the development of a thorium molten salt reactor. Thorizon is a spin-off from the Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group, the organisation that operates the High Flux Reactor in Petten.

The Central Organisation for Radioactive Waste has applied to the country's nuclear regulator for a change in its licence to allow the construction of a new multi-functional storage building for low and intermediate-level waste at its site in Nieuwdorp, in the municipality of Borssele, the Netherlands.

The Foundation Preparation Pallas-reactor has applied to the nuclear regulator for a permit under the Nuclear Energy Act to construct and operate the Pallas research reactor in the Netherlands. It has also applied for a permit under the Water Act for the intake and discharge of cooling water for the reactor.
