Ukraine and the USA have announced a project to demonstrate the production of hydrogen and ammonia using small modular reactor and innovative electrolysis technologies in Ukraine. The public-private consortium also includes Japanese and South Korean companies.

Argonne National Laboratory has teamed up with Constellation Energy Corp to develop carbon-free power generation technologies, including a project focusing on hydrogen production from nuclear power plants, while Bloom Energy and Excel Energy have announced plans for hydrogen production at a nuclear plant in Minnesota. Meanwhile, the US Department of Energy has opened applications for a USD7 billion programme to create regional clean hydrogen hubs.

Energy Harbor has announced it is joining forces with the University of Toledo, major companies in the region and several US DOE laboratories to form an industry-led push to turn "the Midwest into a leading low-carbon fuel production centre".

The International Atomic Energy Agency has launched an initiative to develop a roadmap for the commercial deployment of hydrogen production using nuclear energy. The initiative will culminate in a roadmap guiding document, to provide countries with a tool for evaluating, planning and strategising the development of nuclear hydrogen projects.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will establish a demonstration hydrogen production project at the High-Temperature Test Reactor in Oarai, Ibaraki Prefecture.

Nuclear energy will be the most cost-effective means of producing clean hydrogen when natural gas prices are high, according to a new study by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The IAEA said the study "underscored the importance of having a diverse mix of low-carbon sources for a successful clean energy transition."
