BNS questions limit to extended operation of Belgian units
In a recent position paper, the Belgian Nuclear Society welcomed the political decision to keep two reactors - Doel 4 and Tihange 3 - in operation beyond 2025 because of security of electricity supply concerns. However, it questions why the operation of the units has been limited to just ten years.

Fuel loading begins at UAE plant
Fuel loading has begun at Barakah 3 following the receipt of the unit's operating licence, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation has announced. The UAE's third nuclear unit is expected to start producing electricity later this year.

ČEZ buys Škoda JS from Russian owners
Czech energy giant ČEZ is acquiring the nuclear energy services firm Škoda JS from its Russian owners, a move which avoids the risk of sanctions having an impact on key supplies for ČEZ’s nuclear power plants.

Olkiluoto 3 test production to continue until December
The issue of foreign material in the steam reheater of the Olkiluoto 3 EPR's turbine has delayed the start of regular electricity generation by a further three months, operator Teollisuuden Voima Oyj has announced.

EDF Energy extends plant services contract with Jacobs
USA-based engineering group Jacobs has been awarded a two-year extension to its Stations Services Agreement with EDF Energy, operator of the UK's nuclear power plants. Jacobs' scope includes supporting the safe operation and maintenance of the advanced gas-cooled reactor plants, which account for about 17% of the country's electricity generation.

First use of 3D-printed nuclear fuel debris filters
Nuclear fuel debris filters manufactured by Westinghouse Electric Sweden AB using 3D printing technology have been installed at unit 2 of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in Finland and unit 3 of the Oskarshamn plant in Sweden.

California could decarbonise faster with nuclear, study finds
Extending operations at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant would greatly reduce carbon emissions and natural gas use and could help California reach its decarbonisation goals years earlier than it otherwise would, according to a new study carried out by Brattle Group and released by Carbon Free California.

Korean reactor starts supplying electricity
Unit 1 of the Shin Hanul nuclear power plant in South Korea was connected to the electricity grid for the first time on 9 June, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power announced. The unit - the first of two APR-1400 reactors at the site - is scheduled to enter commercial operation later this year.

First Japanese BWR cleared for restart
The governor of Japan's Shimane prefecture has approved the restart of unit 2 at Chugoku Electric Power Company's Shimane nuclear power plant. His approval marks the completion of the process to gain the consent of local communities for the 789 MWe boiling water reactor to resume operation.

IAEA completes follow-up mission to Chernobyl
The International Atomic Energy Agency last week concluded a mission to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine and the surrounding Exclusion Zone after carrying out planned nuclear safety, security and safeguards activities there. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said he is trying to organise a mission to the Zaporizhzhia plant, which remains under the control of Russian military forces.
