Tohoku Electric Power Company has applied to Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority for approval of its decommissioning plan for unit 1 of the Onagawa nuclear power plant in Miyagi Prefecture. The company announced in October 2018 its decision to scrap the unit as it said required safety upgrades would be too expensive and time-consuming.

Japan's Tokyo Electric Power Company today announced its official decision to decommission the four reactors at the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant, close to the damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant. The company said in June 2018 that it was considering decommissioning the plant in conjunction with Fukushima Daiichi in response to local demands for a decision on the fate of the site.

Comprehensive Decommissioning International, the joint venture company between SNC-Lavalin and Holtec International, has won its first commercial contract. Under the contract, which it said is worth "hundreds of millions of dollars", CDI will be responsible for decommissioning, demolishing and cleaning up the site of the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in New Jersey, USA.

The keys for the New Safe Confinement shielding unit 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant were symbolically presented to the Ukrainian authorities yesterday, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has announced.

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy has been awarded a contract by Comprehensive Decommissioning International to decommission reactor internals and the reactor pressure vessel at the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in New Jersey, USA. CDI is a joint venture company of Holtec and SNC-Lavalin.

Holtec International has completed its acquisition of the shut-down Oyster Creek nuclear power plant from Exelon. Meanwhile, all nuclear fuel has been removed from the reactor at Entergy's Pilgrim nuclear power plant, which is due to be sold to Holtec later this year for accelerated decommissioning.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved the transfer of Oyster Creek's licence from Exelon Generation Co to Oyster Creek Environmental Protection, as owner, and Holtec Decommissioning International, as decommissioning operator.
 

Japan's Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation and AECOM of the USA have agreed to collaborate in providing decommissioning services to nuclear power plants in Japan.

Work has begun on two large-scale permanent storage units for decontaminated waste material at the US Department of Energy's Savannah River Site, where one of the so-called "mega units" is already in operation and another is under construction.

Consultancy company North Wind Inc is to develop a strategic plan that will assess the feasibility of relocating used nuclear fuel at the San Onofre nuclear plant to a "commercially reasonable, off-site facility" under a contract awarded by Southern California Edison.

Engineers at Lancaster University are developing computer systems for robots handling hazardous nuclear waste. The software will make the robots semi-autonomous - simplifying human control, which has to be done remotely due to the highly radioactive environments in which the robots operate.

NAC International Inc has announced it will supply its ultra-high capacity Magnastor systems for transportable dry used fuel storage at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant under a project award from Exelon Generation. The contract is the seventh for the Magnastor system.
