The start of electricity generation for unit 1 of the Hinkley Point C plant in the UK is now expected in June 2027 and the project completion costs are now estimated in the range of GBP25 to 26 billion (in 2015 prices), EDF has announced following a review.

The UK's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Welsh development company Cwmni Egino have announced they will work together on proposals for the siting of a new nuclear development at the Trawsfynydd site in north Wales. 

EDF Energy has started removing the used fuel from the core of Hunterston B's Reactor 3, an advanced gas-cooled reactor that shut down in November 2021. Defuelling is the first stage of the nuclear decommissioning process.

The Magnox reprocessing plant at Sellafield will end its operations in July, marking the completion of the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority's Magnox Operating Programme.

The UK government has announced the launch of GBP120 million (USD146 million) in funding to support development of new nuclear energy projects, stimulate competition in the industry and unlock investment across the UK. The Future Nuclear Enabling Fund will help to realise the government's ambition to approve eight new reactors by 2030.

British nuclear services company Cavendish Nuclear has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with X-energy of the USA to act as its deployment partner for High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors in the UK. The UK plans to build an HTGR as the centrepiece of its Advanced Modular Reactor Research, Development & Demonstration Programme.

UK Energy Minister Greg Hands has opened one of three new training centres to support the Hinkley Point C project in Somerset. Together with existing facilities and investment into education and skills, the centres will be ready to help local people join the additional 4000 workers needed for the next phase of the plant's construction.

The chairman of Rolls-Royce SMR, Paul Stein, has told the Reuters news agency he hopes to get regulatory approval for its small modular reactor design by mid-2024, with grid power able to be produced by 2029.

Microsoft solutions provider Avanade has completed the first phase of a project to bring state-of-the-art cloud infrastructure to EDF's Hinkley Point C, providing a secure cloud platform to support the construction of the UK's first nuclear power plant to be built in over 20 years. Additional applications will be migrated in future phases.

Cerberus Nuclear and Assystem have been selected to deliver the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production reactor in-board shield design as part of the STEP Engineering Framework. STEP will be the UK's prototype fusion energy power plant.

The Energy Security Strategy's ambitions are for eight new reactors, plus small modular reactors, helping to produce 24 GWe capacity by 2050, representing about 25% of the UK's projected electricity demand.

EDF Energy is leading a Long-Term Operation programme aimed at extending the operating lifespan of Sizewell B - the UK's only pressurised water reactor and newest nuclear power plant - by at least 20 years to 2055.
