Uranium development in Wyoming's Gas Hills will be funded from the proceeds of a newly completed private share placement which sees the Korea Electric Power Company (Kepco) become the largest shareholder in Canada-based Strathmore Minerals.

Korea Resources Corporation has agreed to invest $3.5 million over two years for a 50% stake in the Mkuju South uranium project in Tanzania.

A memorandum of understanding covering information exchange, joint research and education and training in the field of nuclear safety has been signed by Khalifa University in the United Arab Emirates and the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS). The agreement, signed at a ceremony in Abu Dhabi by Khalifa University president Tod Laursen and KINS president Youn Won Park, establishes a foundation to share publications and information on nuclear safety and radiation protection and to conduct related research and development. A South Korean consortium is to build the UAE's first nuclear reactors, with construction work on the first unit expected to begin in earnest by late 2012.

KW Nuclear Components Co (KWN) has begun production of control element assemblies (CEAs) for nuclear power plants based on Combustion Engineering designs. Combustion Engineering was acquired by Westinghouse Electric Co in 2000 through its purchase of Asea Brown Boveri's nuclear businesses. A CEA is a cluster of control rods which are moved by a single drive mechanism into or out of a fuel element in order to control the nuclear reaction within a reactor core. The first order of 56 CEAs will be delivered to unit 5 of South Korea's Yonggwang plant in February 2012. KWN was formed in 2008 for the fabrication of CEAs, with Westinghouse holding a 55% stake and Kepco Nuclear Fuel Co (KNF) holding 45%. The construction of a CEA production facility at KNF's fuel fabrication plant in Daejeon, South Korea, was completed in April 2011. KNF itself is over 96% owned by Korea Electric Power Corp (Kepco) and supplies all the fuel for Korea's pressurized water reactors (PWRs) and Candu units. The APR-1400 under construction at Shin Kori unit 4 had earlier been expected to include the first control elements manufactured by KWN.

Japan's lower house has approved four international nuclear cooperation agreements in a sign of commitment to nuclear exports.

The accumulation of contaminated water and the existence of radioactive debris continue to hamper work to stabilize the reactors at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. Meanwhile, South Korea and China have agreed to greater cooperation with Japan in nuclear safety and disaster control management.
