Tepco Holdings has made significant progress in its adoption of a stronger safety culture, an advisory body to the company has said. The Nuclear Reform Monitoring Committee, which has reviewed the company's self-assessment, made several recommendations for further improvement.

The UK intends to leave the European Atomic Energy Community, according to explanatory notes to a bill the government published yesterday authorising Brexit. The notes state the bill empowers the prime minister to leave both the European Union and Euratom.

Cameco yesterday announced its earnings expectations and operational changes planned for 2017. "While it is not our usual practice to disclose earnings expectations, we are announcing our earnings expectations for 2016 in advance of our participation in upcoming investor conferences due to the significant discrepancy between analyst earnings estimates and our current expectations," the Saskatchewan, Canada-based uranium producer said.

The Nuclear Skills Strategy Group (NSSG) today launched its Nuclear Skills Strategic Plan to ensure UK nuclear employers can "recruit skilled people at the required rate to meet the sector's ambitious forward program". The Strategic Plan was launched at Nuclear 2016, the Nuclear Industry Association’s annual conference in London.

Adriènne Kelbie, chief executive of the UK's Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), reflected on a "hectic and rewarding" introduction to the nuclear industry in a recent interview with World Nuclear News (WNN). Kelbie, who joined ONR in January, described a "positive year" for the UK nuclear safety and security regulator, but acknowledged there is still "plenty of hard work ahead" to help ONR be "fit for a busier and more challenging future".

The UK's Horizon Nuclear Power has completed the public consultation process for its Wylfa Newydd nuclear power plant project. Hundreds of people from across Anglesey and North Wales took part, offering views and opinions which Horizon said will help finalise its new nuclear plans.

The first nuclear operators for Vogtle units 3 and 4 have passed their initial US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensing examination. The examination is the culmination of nearly four years of training for the operators.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Rosatom director-general Sergey Kirienko as first deputy head of the Presidential Administration with immediate effect. In charge of the Russian state nuclear corporation since December 2007, Kirienko has been replaced by Alexey Likhachov, deputy minister of economic development and trade since 2010.
