The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has certified the Korean-designed Advanced Power Reactor 1400. The certificate states that the NRC finds the APR-1400 design fully meets US safety requirements.

The Korea Radioactive Waste Agency has signed agreements with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and Canada's Nuclear Waste Management Organisation to cooperate on decommissioning nuclear facilities and radioactive waste management.

South Korea's Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction yesterday signed the 'business collaboration agreement' with US small modular reactor developer NuScale Power for supply of NuScale Power Modules and other equipment. Doosan also signed the 'unit purchase agreement' through which it will make a cash equity investment in NuScale with Korean financial investors.

Nawah Energy Company - which will operate the UAE's first nuclear power plant at Barakah - has today signed a long-term maintenance services agreement with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, supported by Kepco Plant Service & Engineering. It has also signed a five-year maintenance service agreement with Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction.

US small modular reactor developer NuScale Power has signed a memorandum of understanding with Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction - part of South Korea's Doosan Group - for strategic cooperation to support deployment of the NuScale Power Module worldwide.

Unit 4 of the Shin Kori nuclear power plant was connected to the electricity grid on 22 April, Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power announced today. Unit 3 of the South Korean plant became the first APR-1400 to begin supplying electricity to the grid in January 2016.

Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power has started up its new Shin Kori 4 reactor and plans to connect it to the electricity grid at the end of this month. It is the second APR-1400 design unit to start up of a planned global fleet of at least 10.

An agreement to jointly participate in overseas nuclear digital instrumentation and control projects has recently been signed between Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. Both companies were involved in the development of the Korean Digital I&C system.

The US Department of Energy Office of Science has announced USD30 million of funding for experimental research on magnetic fusion energy science at to be carried out at international tokamak facilities.
 

The leaders of South Korea and the United Arab Emirates have said the two countries will seek opportunities to cooperate in the field of nuclear energy beyond their current collaboration on the Barakah nuclear power plant project. This will include opportunities in third countries.

South Korea's Kepco Engineering & Construction Company has signed an agreement with Czech engineering firm UJV Rez to strengthen their cooperation in nuclear power plant projects.

A ceremony has been held to mark the loading of the first fuel into unit 4 at South Korea's Shin Kori nuclear power plant. The country's nuclear regulator gave Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power permission to start up the APR1400 unit on 1 February.
