Research reactors in Canada and the Netherlands will work together to create a dual supply of the medical isotope iodine-125, McMaster University and NRG have announced. The collaboration is a response to a worldwide shortage of the product in 2017.
 

US Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management contractors have used new techniques, including the use of a diamond wire saw, in a collaborative effort to demolish a legacy research reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory.

Ownership of Italy's Ispra-1 research reactor has officially been transferred to Societa Gestione Impianti Nucleari SpA (Sogin), the state-owned company responsible for dismantling the country's nuclear power plants. Decommissioning of the reactor, which ceased operation in 1973, will begin once Sogin's application has been approved.

Ahead of its decommissioning, the low-enriched uranium fuel has been removed from the Saskatchewan Research Council's Slowpoke-2 research reactor in Saskatoon and transported to the USA.

An irradiation test on molten nuclear fuel salts inside the High Flux Reactor has been completed at Petten in the Netherlands. The results will yield new data on the safe operation of molten salt reactors.

Atommash, part of the Volgodonsk branch of AEM Technology, has completed hydraulic tests of the reactor vessel of the MBIR multipurpose sodium-cooled fast neutron research reactor. MBIR is under construction at the site of the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors at Dmitrovgrad, which is in Russia's Ulyanovsk region.

The operator of the Nigerian Research Reactor-1, known as NIRR-1, has shown a high commitment to safety following the conversion of the reactor core to use low-enriched uranium as fuel instead of high-enriched uranium, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. It made a number of recommendations to the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission to further enhance safety.

The US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration has awarded cooperative agreements for the production of molybdenum-99 to three US companies. The announcement came as one of the companies - Shine Medical Technologies - submitted an application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to produce medical isotopes at its new production facility in Janesville, Wisconsin.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has licensed the first entirely digital nuclear reactor instrumentation and control system in the USA, at a university-based research reactor originally built in 1962. The NRC licence also for the first time covers parts certified under standards laid down by a non-US regulatory body.
 

The Canadian government of Canada has awarded Canadian Nuclear Laboratories a CAD8.5 million (USD6.5 million) contract to refuel the Royal Military College of Canada's Slowpoke-2 research reactor. The three-year project will enable the reactor to operate for another 30 years.

The US Department of Energy has announced USD49.3 million in funding for nuclear energy research, facility access, crosscutting technology development, and infrastructure for 58 advanced nuclear technology projects in 25 states.

The ANSTO Nuclear Medicine facility has received a regulatory licence that will allow it to move to full production of molybdenum-99, the Australian nuclear science and technology organisation announced today.
