Hydro-Québec mulls Gentilly 2 recommissioning
Hydro-Québec has confirmed it is assessing the current state of the plant which closed in 2012, as it looks at options to increase its production of clean electricity.

Bruce 6 restarted following refurbishment
Unit 6 of the Bruce nuclear power plant in Ontario has resumed operation following its Major Component Replacement project, Bruce Power announced. The Candu reactor, which was taken offline for the work in January 2020, is scheduled to resume commercial operation later this year.

Vogtle 3 begins commercial operation
The USA's first newly constructed nuclear power plant in more than 30 years is now serving customers - it reached first criticality in March, was connected to the electricity grid in April and is now officially generating electricity for customers, Georgia Power has announced.

Eleventh Japanese reactor resumes operation
Unit 1 of the Takahama nuclear power plant in Japan's Fukui Prefecture has been restarted after being taken offline more than 12 years ago. Kansai Electric Power Company plans to return the 780 MWe (net) pressurised water reactor to commercial operation at the end of August.

Binding agreement on Belgian reactor operations due in October
A framework agreement to extend the operation of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 power reactors by 10 years has been signed between French utility Engie and the Belgian federal government. Meanwhile, Belgium's Federal Agency for Nuclear Control has set out "its expectations regarding nuclear safety" for the extended operation of the units.

Zaporizhzhia: Unit 4 in hot shutdown, IAEA reports mines
Unit 4 at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been switched to hot shutdown, with unit 5 switched from hot to cold shutdown to allow maintenance work to be carried out. Meanwhile the International Atomic Energy Agency reports it has seen "directional anti-personnel mines on the periphery of the site".

KHNP launches reactor safety enhancement technology
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power announced it has developed the world's first web-based automatic monitoring system to prevent accidents in nuclear reactors and related systems. The company plans to introduce the system to all its nuclear power plants.

IAEA team continue Zaporizhzhia inspections, but await access to roofs
International Atomic Energy Agency experts at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant have carried out further inspections "so far without observing any heavy military equipment, explosives or mines" but are still awaiting access to the rooftops of the reactor buildings.

UAE launches nuclear educational courses
A Diploma in Nuclear Technology course has been launched by Nawah Energy Company to educate and train UAE National High School graduates to become local operators at the Barakah nuclear power plant. Meanwhile, the UAE has launched its first MSc Programme in Medical Physics.

Second refurbished Darlington reactor back online
The refurbished unit 3 of the Darlington nuclear power plant has been reconnected to the grid 169 days ahead of schedule, Ontario Power Generation announced. Unit 3 is the second of four Candu units at the site to undergo refurbishment in a 10-year project that will enable the plant to continue operations until 2055.

Mochovce 3 power increased to 75%
Slovenské elektrárne says that the energy start-up stage of Mochovce 3 has seen its power level increased to 75% - with the final trial run at 100% power for six days and nights now expected to take place between September and October.
