Russia's MBIR gets construction licence
Russian regulator Rostechnadzor has issued a construction licence for the multipurpose sodium-cooled fast neutron research reactor, or MBIR by its Russian acronym. The reactor complex will be located at the site of the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors, in Dimitrovgrad.

TVO to miss Olkiluoto 4 licence application deadline
Finnish utility Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) does not plan to submit a construction licence application for the fourth unit at its Olkiluoto plant before its 2010 decision-in-principle expires next month. The company had earlier sought an extension to that decision.

Tractebel Engineering becomes owner’s engineer for Pallas
Belgium's Tractebel Engineering has signed a contract to be owner's engineer for the planned Pallas research reactor to be built at Petten in the Netherlands. The facility will replace the existing High Flux Reactor that has been in operation since 1961 and take over its role as a major supplier of the world's medical radioisotopes.

Fuqing 5 foundation in place
The pouring of concrete for the base mat of the reactor building of Fuqing 5, China's first Hualong One unit, has been completed, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced today.

China starts building first Hualong One unit
Construction has officially started on unit 5 of the Fuqing nuclear power plant in China's Fujian province, China National Nuclear Corporation announced today. The unit will be a demonstration Hualong One reactor, a design the company aims to export.

First European parts delivered to Iter
The first European-supplied components have been delivered to the construction site of the Iter project at Cadarache in southern France. The large tanks were produced in Spain and will be part of the fusion reactor's water detritiation system.

Callaway fuel store nears completion
Major civil construction work has been completed for an underground dry used fuel storage facility at Ameren's Callaway nuclear power plant in Missouri. The first canisters containing used fuel are scheduled to be put in place in July, Holtec International said.

Preparations continue for initial CAP1400 units
Construction of China's first two CAP1400 reactors at Shidaowan in Shandong province awaits final approval. However, site preparations for the units are well advanced with the pouring of concrete for the foundations of the first unit's conventional island having now begun.
