The project has geopolitical significance, not only for Energoatom and the Ukrainian state, he said, but above all for the countries of Europe, "which are forced to fight for their energy independence".

Synthos Green Energy has signed a cooperation agreement with Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) to assess the feasibility of the micro modular reactor (MMR) plant design to generate carbon-free hydrogen, heat, and power for use in SGE’s chemical plants. SGE is part of Synthos SA Capital Group, which includes Synthos SA, a chemical manufacturer based in Poland, with operations in the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and France. The aim is for the MMR Energy System to replace existing plants that use coal or natural gas.

Synthos Green Energy has entered discussions with the Polish nuclear regulator about a potential GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy BWRX-300 small modular reactor project. SGE is seeking a general opinion from the regulator, Państwowa Agencja Atomistyki, which it described as the first step of the procedure before the regulatory process for the planned construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland.

Brouillette signed the agreement yesterday and it will be signed by Naimski once it is received in Warsaw.

The shareholders of PGE EJ1, the company set up to build and operate Poland's first nuclear power plant, have signed a letter of intent with the State Treasury regarding the acquisition of 100% of its shares. The transaction, if completed, will see the government take full control of PGE EJ1 at the end of the year.

A high-level panel of senior political figures and experts from leading international energy organisations yesterday discussed how nuclear energy can address some of the most pressing issues the world is facing. The discussion took place during the first session of World Nuclear Association's Strategic eForum 2020.

Polish Climate Minister Michał Kurtyka yesterday unveiled his plan to construct six new nuclear power units by 2040 as the country transitions to a clean energy economy. This plan includes reducing the share of coal in electricity production to between 37% and 56% in 2030, and to between 11% and 28% in 2040, depending on CO2 prices. Coal last year accounted for 74% of Polish electricity generation.

Poland plans to phase out coal more quickly than its previously stated ambition, according to a new draft energy policy that looks ahead to 2040, Polish business daily Puls Biznesu reported today. The document, which was produced by the Ministry of Climate, states that the share of coal in the country's energy mix should fall to 35.6-56% in 10 years, which contrasts with the 56-60% provided for in a government report last November.

Poland will soon start the tender process for developers interested in participating in its first nuclear power plant project, Piotr Naimski, government commissioner for strategic energy infrastructure, said following the third US-Poland Strategic Dialogue on Energy held in Washington DC last week. Poland's Climate Minister Michał Kurtyka, who was also at the meeting, has commented on the country's pro-nuclear policy as a way to reduce carbon emissions and other pollutants.
